1.7 million have been displaced with no home to return to and no security for food
In November 2023, nearly 1.7 million Afghanis experienced forced expulsion from Pakistan. While the UN has expressed criticism of this treatment of refugees, the world has been largely silent. Most of this refugee population were born in Pakistan and have never seen Afghanistan. The majority first moved to Pakistan in the late 1970’s after the Soviet invasion. Following 9/11, more waves of Afghanis migrated to Pakistan looking for safety from war and hunger, with the most recent migrants including those who left after the Taliban take over of Kabul in 2021.

The refugees make up mostly women and children
With the forced expulsion, these refugees, many of whom are children, had no option but to return to a country plagued with political and humanitarian crises. They return to a place with no home, family or connections, employment or a sustainable option to feed themselves. The situation has been dire, with many refugees being persecuted and tortured by police during the border crossing. Many of these refugees are living in tents again, despite the harsh climate and terrain. They are at risk of starvation and urgently need our assistance.

Thousands of families in Herat, Afghanistan have resorted to living in tents despite the harsh winter climate of the desert
While refugees have been pouring back in from the Eastern border, families in North West Afghanistan, in Herat, are still recovering from the effects of the earthquake in October 2023. This disaster killed over 2000 people and left thousands of homes destroyed. Tens of thousands have been displaced, with many living in tents despite the winter and dust storms of the desert. These families urgently need blankets, food, clothes, medical supplies and generators to get through the remainder of the winter.

With Ramadan also quickly approaching, Hidden Humanity will also be facilitating a Ramadan food package campaign in these areas to allow fasting Muslims to have access to food for iftar. This is an opportunity to help a people, especially for Ramadan where all good deeds are multiplied. But we do not need to wait till Ramadan. Book and intend today and secure your reward. While media coverage and representation have been limited, Hidden Humanity’s on-the-ground assistance will allow helpless Afghanis to access the help they desperately need.

The nation of Afghanistan is bleeding. With almost 40 percent of the entire country facing food insecurity and hunger, coupled with the ongoing devastation of floods, the humanitarian crisis is unprecedented. The rise of mother-led households has seen up to 80 percent of women and children now suffering from malnutrition. Al-Nu’man ibn Bashir reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The parable of the believers in their affection, mercy, and compassion for each other is that of a body. When any limb aches, the whole body reacts with sleeplessness and fever.” (Muslim, Bukhari). The people of Afghanistan have been suffering in silence as they face hunger, cold and disasters alone. Let us come together in mercy and compassion to help relieve the needs of this nation.
