This Donation Policy explains how Hidden Humanity — a 501(c)(3) public charity (EIN 92-2883598) — handles refunds, recurring gifts, campaign designations, zakat segregation, and tax receipts. It applies to all donations made through hiddenhumanity.org.
1. Refunds
Errors and duplicate charges
If you were charged in error or your card was charged more than once for the same gift, please contact us immediately via our contact page. We will investigate and, if confirmed, process a full refund promptly — typically within 5–10 business days depending on your card issuer.
Discretionary refund requests
We understand that circumstances change. Refund requests made within 30 days of the original gift will be honoured provided the donated funds have not yet been deployed to beneficiaries or committed to a field operation. Once funds have been deployed we are generally unable to reverse the transaction, but we will work with you to find a satisfactory resolution.
To request a refund, please use our contact page and include the email address used for the donation, the approximate date, and the amount.
2. Recurring donations
Recurring (monthly or weekly) donations are managed through Stripe. You may cancel your recurring gift at any time from the donor portal at /my/giving. Cancellations take effect before the next scheduled charge — no further amounts will be drawn after you cancel. We do not charge a fee for cancellation.
If you are unable to access the donor portal, please contact us and we will cancel on your behalf within one business day.
3. Campaign designations
When you donate to a specific campaign, those funds are designated for that campaign and used exclusively to serve its beneficiaries. We honour designations as a matter of policy and fiduciary duty.
In the event that a campaign is overfunded (i.e., raised funds exceed the stated need) or permanently closed, any excess funds will be redirected to closely related work within the same programme area, or to our general fund if no closely related programme is active. We will communicate any such redirection to donors where practically possible.
4. Zakat handling
Gifts designated as zakat are treated with particular care in accordance with Islamic jurisprudence. Zakat-flagged donations are:
- Held in a segregated accounting bucket and never commingled with non-zakat (sadaqah) funds.
- Disbursed only to beneficiaries who qualify as eligible recipients under the eight categories of zakat (asnaf), as assessed by our field teams.
- Tracked in our transparency ledger separately from sadaqah distributions so donors can verify segregation.
If a zakat-designated campaign closes before the funds are fully deployed, the remaining balance is held until a suitable qualifying campaign or beneficiary pool is identified — it is never redirected to non-zakat purposes.
5. Tax receipts
A tax receipt is emailed to the address on your account immediately after each successful donation. Receipts include:
- Our legal name: Hidden Humanity
- Our EIN: 92-2883598
- The donation amount, date, and currency
- The statement: “No goods or services were provided in exchange for this contribution.”
Hidden Humanity is a 501(c)(3) public charity. Donations are generally tax-deductible to the extent permitted by US federal law. For UK donors who have made a Gift Aid declaration, HMRC-compliant records are maintained and Gift Aid claims are submitted on your behalf.
If you did not receive a receipt or need a duplicate, please contact us via our contact page.
6. Questions
Any questions about this policy can be directed to us via the contact page. We aim to respond within five business days.
