Donor FAQ

Common questions about donating to Hidden Humanity, the 100% model, zakat compliance, and how your gift is tracked from receipt to delivery.

Is my donation to Hidden Humanity tax-deductible?

Yes. Hidden Humanity is a 501(c)(3) public charity (EIN 92-2883598) registered in the United States. Donations are generally tax-deductible to the extent permitted by US federal law. A tax receipt is emailed to you immediately after each successful gift, and annual giving statements are available in your donor portal.

How does the 100% model work?

Hidden Humanity operates two legally separate registered charities. The .org (EIN 92-2883598) receives project donations — 100% of which flow through to beneficiaries via vetted volunteer hubs. A sibling charity, Hidden Humanity Administration (EIN 93-2898074), covers all operating costs — salaries, rent, technology, legal, and audit — funded independently by a private donor circle. Your project donation is never touched by overhead. Learn more about the 100% model.

Who pays the credit-card processing fees?

During checkout, donors have the option to cover the processing fee themselves so that 100% of their stated gift reaches beneficiaries. If you choose not to cover the fee, it is absorbed by Hidden Humanity Administration — it is never deducted from other donors' gifts.

Is Hidden Humanity zakat-compliant?

Yes. Zakat-flagged donations are held in a completely segregated accounting ledger and never commingled with sadaqah (non-zakat) funds. Disbursement is limited to beneficiaries who qualify under the eight eligible categories (asnaf) of zakat, as assessed by our field teams. Hidden Humanity takes no amil (administrative) deduction from zakat funds — the 100% model means administration is covered separately. Use the zakat calculator to estimate your obligation.

Where does Hidden Humanity work?

Hidden Humanity currently operates across 8 countries through vetted volunteer hubs: Gaza/Palestine, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Jordan, and Lebanon. Each hub is a locally embedded team that we vet, train, and support. Browse active campaigns to see which programmes are currently accepting gifts.

How do I know my money actually arrived?

Every campaign carries a live transparency ledger showing funds raised, amounts deployed, and individual distribution events — sourced from the same database our finance team reconciles against. The public transparency page gives an organisation-wide view. Field distributions are logged by our volunteer hubs and approved by HQ before the ledger is updated.

Can I give anonymously?

Yes. Your name is never displayed publicly on any campaign page or donor list. You may also leave the name field blank at checkout. Your contact details are retained internally only to issue your tax receipt and, if applicable, to fulfil Gift Aid obligations for UK donors.

Can I cancel or change my monthly donation?

Yes — at any time and at no charge. Sign in to the donor portal to cancel or update your recurring gift. Cancellations take effect immediately and no further amounts are drawn after the cancellation date. If you cannot access the portal, contact us and we will cancel on your behalf within one business day.

What is your refund policy?

Refund requests submitted within 30 days of the original gift will be honoured provided the funds have not yet been deployed to beneficiaries or committed to a field operation. Error charges and duplicate charges are refunded in full. Once funds have been deployed we are generally unable to reverse the transaction, but we will work with you to find a satisfactory resolution. Full details are in the Donation Policy.

What happens if a campaign is overfunded or closes?

When you donate to a specific campaign, those funds are designated for that campaign. If a campaign is overfunded or permanently closed, any excess funds are redirected to closely related work within the same programme area, or to our general fund if no closely related programme is active. For zakat-designated campaigns, any undeployed balance is held — never redirected to non-zakat purposes — until a qualifying campaign or beneficiary pool is identified. We communicate any such redirection to donors where practically possible. See the Donation Policy for full details.

How do I get a tax receipt?

A receipt is emailed automatically to the address on your account immediately after each successful donation. It includes our legal name (Hidden Humanity), EIN 92-2883598, the donation amount, date, and the required statement that no goods or services were provided in exchange. Annual giving statements are also available in the donor portal. If you need a duplicate or did not receive a receipt, contact us.
