“This is an opportunity to give your zakat in a way that you don’t have anywhere else. This is going to a person who is on the ground, who doesn’t take anything for himself, who is actually helping people — and who is very trustworthy and very reliable.”
Takiyya of Sayyida Khadija
Levant
The Takiyya of Sayyida Khadija is a community kitchen established by Abu Munir alongside with Hidden Humanity to feed widows, orphans, and the most vulnerable members of the community. It revives the centuries-old Islamic tradition of the takiyya — a public kitchen that provides free meals to those in need. The project is seeking donations (zakat-eligible) to sustain and expand its operations.
About Abu Munir
Abu Munir is a trusted community leader who established the Takiyya of Sayyida Khadija approximately one year ago. Key facts:
- On the ground — personally oversees all operations
- Takes no compensation — does not receive any salary, fee, or personal benefit from donations
- Proven track record — has been running the kitchen consistently for over a year
- Holistic approach — beyond food, he helps people find income and business opportunities
- Compassionate outreach — has personally visited and provided food to individuals who were tortured under the previous regime and left with lasting trauma
- Government engagement — has proposed to the government the reactivation of two historic kitchens
What the Takiyya Does
Food Distribution
- 1,500+ meals served daily to widows, and orphans, and hospital patients
- Freshly prepared meals cooked on-site in large quantities
- Consistent operations running for over one year
Water Stations
- Established free water stations where clean water flows from the ground
- Accessible to all, with priority given to widows and orphans
Livelihood Support
- Helps vulnerable people find income opportunities and business ideas
- Aims to empower individuals to become self-sufficient
Care for the Afflicted
- Provides food and visits to individuals traumatized by the previous regime
- Reaches people who have been left behind by other aid efforts
Historic Kitchen Revival
Abu Munir has recently proposed to the government the reactivation of two historic kitchens:
- The Takiyya Maqam of Sheikh Muhyiddin al-Arabi — one of the region's most revered sites, whose kitchen historically fed people from across the area
- The Takiyya Mawlawiyya: A second historic takiyya — another well-known kitchen that once served as a major food distribution point from the 9th Islamic century
Both kitchens are currently not operative. The goal is to restore them to full operation, dramatically increasing the number of people who can be fed.
Why This Project is Zakat-Eligible
- Serves widows and orphans — among the most deserving recipients of zakat according to Islamic jurisprudence
- 100% of funds go to beneficiaries — Abu Munir takes no compensation whatsoever
- Zero administrative overhead — no salaries, office costs, or organizational expenses deducted
- Direct, on-the-ground impact — donations translate directly into meals, water, and livelihood support
- Fi sabil Allah — the entire effort is carried out purely for the sake of Allah
Trust and Transparency
People give zakat to organizations where they often have no visibility into how it is spent. This project is different:
- You know exactly where it goes — to a kitchen feeding hospital patients, widows and orphans
- You know who is running it — Abu Munir, a trusted figure on the ground
- You know nothing is skimmed — no salaries, no overhead, no administrative costs
- You can see the results — photos and videos from the kitchen are regularly shared
