Sudan: Clean Water for Al Shorouq School & Displaced Families
The Crisis
At Al Shorouq Al Abyad Basic School for Boys in El Obeid, North Kordofan, 750 students are trying to continue their education while facing a severe water shortage.
The school is also providing shelter to families displaced by ongoing violence in the surrounding region. Altogether, approximately 1,500 people now depend on this one site for their most basic needs.
Through the Mogran Mutual Aid initiative, the school recently received a water truck and three storage barrels. While this provided temporary relief, it is simply not enough for a community of this size.
A nearby community, Al Nazer District – Block 3, is facing the same challenge. Approximately 100 families living there have no easily accessible source of groundwater.
A recent emergency water delivery showed just how urgent the need has become. According to our contact on the ground, it was the first time she could remember a water tanker reaching the community at all.
Emergency deliveries can save lives, but they are temporary.
This community needs a reliable and dignified long-term solution.
⸻
The Solution: A Solar-Powered Water Well
Hidden Humanity is supporting an effort to drill and install a solar-powered groundwater well that will provide clean, reliable water to the school, displaced families sheltering there, and the surrounding community.
Instead of depending on irregular and costly tanker deliveries, families will have access to a permanent local water source.
The solar-powered system will also eliminate the need for ongoing fuel costs, making the project more sustainable and reliable in an area experiencing continued instability.
Project Cost: $8,500 USD
The total estimated project cost is 49,000,000 Sudanese Pounds — approximately $8,500 USD.
The project will be completed in two phases:
Phase 1 — Well Survey & Drilling
19,000,000 SDG
Includes:
- Geophysical study
- Identification of the groundwater source
- Ground drilling
Phase 2 — Pump & Solar Installation
30,000,000 SDG
Includes:
- Submersible water pump
- Piping
- Solar power system
- Installation and commissioning
Total
49,000,000 SDG — approximately $8,500 USD

The Impact
Once completed, this project has the potential to provide reliable water access to more than 1,500 people, while also supporting families in the surrounding neighborhood.
The well will help:
- Provide clean water for 750 students attending Al Shorouq Al Abyad Basic School
- Support approximately 750 displaced family members currently sheltering on the school grounds
- Improve water access for 100 families living in nearby Al Nazer District – Block 3
- Reduce dependence on expensive and unpredictable water tanker deliveries
- Provide a sustainable water source powered by solar energy
- Strengthen the community’s ability to cope with displacement and ongoing instability
⸻
Why This Matters
North Kordofan continues to face tremendous pressure as conflict and displacement affect communities across the region.
Families have been forced to leave their homes and seek safety wherever it can be found. Schools such as Al Shorouq Al Abyad are now serving not only as places of education, but also as shelters for displaced families.
With so many people depending on limited resources, access to water has become one of the community’s most urgent needs.
A water tanker can provide relief for a day. A well can provide water for years.
For $8,500, we have the opportunity to help create a permanent source of clean water for students, displaced families, and an entire surrounding community.
Every contribution brings this well closer to completion.
“Water is the lifeblood, and without water, there would be no life.”
