Shariykah: Quran teacher in Jamaica

Shariykah is the breadwinner of her family since her father passed away in 2013. She teaches the Quran online and grows her own food, but she is struggling to pay for her dialysis and appointments. Shariykah has not asked anyone for help but Muslim Tourists to Jamaica noticed Shariykah's dire need and saw her deteriorating condition. Hidden Humanity will visit Jamaica in June 2023 to see how Shariykah can be further supported.

Shariykah is a 33 year old, born to some of the first Muslims in her small town in Jamaica. Shariykah has been an Online Quran teacher at the Understanding Quran Academy in India for the last 4 years and has been a light for the few Muslims in her small town in Jamaica. Her current job salary however, is not sufficient to support her huge medical expenses. Shariykah has been the breadwinner, since her father passed away in 2013 from a lung condition. She has been struggling especially since 2020 when she was diagnosed with failing kidneys and her medical bills grew out of control.

Shariykah has needed Dialysis every month since 2020. She tried to get private health insurance but because she is already very sick and unable to pay the upfront fee without sacrificing a few months of treatment. She has resortedt to getting dialysis only once a week instead of the required 2x a week, just enough for her to continue to barely survive. Shariykah spends $400 a year on the rheumatologist, $385 on the nephrologist and with one dialysis session costing $335, her medical bills alone for one year amount to US $17,000.

Apart from losing her father, Shariykah also lost her sister to kidney failure. Now she is responsible for her 70-year old mother, who is one of the first Muslims in their city. Shariykah’s mother was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and ankle tendinitis and is unable to walk without assistance. Shariykah is the only person who can take care of her.

With the inadequate dialysis, Shariykah says she notices the toxins building up in her blood and she feels sleepy and sometimes unable to teach the Quran. Shariyka was originally an ACCA Accounting student, but had to leave the program when she got sick. She has been growing her own food, and was relying on savings from when she worked in accounting, but now her funds have been depleted. Shariykah has had her share of trials. She has been struggling to make ends meet, tend to her mother and address her health. With the limited medical treatment however, she is finding her responsibilities become more and more difficult to manage. Shariykah is now seeing a marked deterioration in her health and she worries about who will take care of her mother if she gets worse.

Shariykah’s sister was only 19 when she passed away from this same kidney disease. Let us come together to help Shariykah get annual health insurance so she can receive the dialysis and full medical treatment she needs to continue her incredible work with Islam in Jamaica and her support of her mother. Let us ensure that the light in this tiny town of Jamaica continues to light the path for others.
