The Syrian Women Association in Amman, Jordan, has developed a 6-month tailoring course to empower refugee widows. These are women who were forced to leave their homes in Syria due to the civil war that destroyed homes, and families and took the lives of many. Some of them traveled to Jordan by foot with practically no belongings and never knowing if they would see their husbands or sons again.
This program aims to give these widows an opportunity to create their own income and be self sufficient. It trains 15 widows at a time in the art of sewing and garment-making, with 140 hours of instruction spread over three days per week. Upon completion, each student receives a personal home sewing machine and basic materials to start their own tailoring service.
With $17,450 the Association will be able to fund 15 industrial sewing machines, 30 personal home sewing machines, sewing materials, trainers' salaries, and rent for training facilities. With the help of generous donors, the Syrian Women Association can use these funds to give a better life to at least 30 different families.
This organization continues to be a beacon of hope for refugees- for women and children who are the real victims of war. It gives those who are still in the process of grieving the loss of their families, home, and country, a second chance to rebuild their lives and provide for themselves and their families.
